Kristina did a fabulous job...on time...very knowledgeable...explained all aspects o the job upfront...so no surprises...above all a very friendly attitude...cleaned very things up. I could not have asked for a ... better plumber to come in such a hurry ..especially during the weekend and evening hours, as the job had to be done for my elderly parents , both who suffer from dementia and over 90 years young. Far to many companies are out the dollar and no customer service or honest concern for the customers needs, but Kristina is not such a person, will without a doubt call if needed again.

Technician was on time (early actually) . Politely introduced himself and entered the house where he place shoe covers over his shoes. He examined both jobs and described how he ... would do each. After cleaning the toilet water flow, he cleaned the work area before going on to the next job. He carefully explained what he did to correct the toilet problem. He then went to the next job which was to replace a section of 3/4" copper tubing in the ceiling in the basement. He explained why the line was failing and what he had to do to fix it. After the repairs were complete, he cleaned the work area, assured that there were no leaks and then (after settling the bill) he departed. He was very polite and efficient in his work and attitude. I appreciate his approach to his job. Thank you, Roto Rooter

Rohming and Duane arrived promptly, were very professional, and left the work site clean. This was a water heater that was installed a little over a year ago, and ... they were aggressive in their trouble shooting until they found the problem and fixed it, under warranty. Given that it isn't any fun to be without hot water during the coldest days of the winter, we are still very pleased with the quality of work that we received.

I commend Robert Boyle for his excellent work. He's a great teacher! His work was accurate and explained terms I didn't understand with patience. He did more ... than I requested as one aspect of the project led to another. He fixed some things that needed to be brought up to code and advised me of future projects to consider. He solved problems in as easy manner and gave me options along the way. I will definitely call him to return after the dry wall and flooring are finished. Thank you Robert for your expertise. RLM

Frequently Asked Questions in Baltimore

Is "hard water" a factor in Baltimore’s drainage issues?

Yes. Baltimore’s water contains minerals that can cause scale buildup inside cast-iron and copper pipes. This rough surface acts like sandpaper, catching hair and soap scum, which eventually leads to a stubborn, recurring clog.

Why shouldn't I just use a shop-vac for a flooded basement?

A shop-vac only removes surface water. It cannot pull moisture out of the subfloor, wall studs, or behind baseboards. Professional-grade equipment is necessary to create the high-velocity airflow and low humidity needed to prevent structural rot and permanent odors.

Does my Baltimore homeowners' insurance cover flood damage?

Standard policies usually cover "sudden and accidental" water damage (like a burst pipe), but often require a separate rider for "sewer backup" or "sump pump failure." We document the exact source of the water to help your insurance adjuster determine your coverage.

Does Baltimore’s water supply cause sediment buildup in my water heater?

Yes. The mineral content in the local water supply often leads to "hard water" scale inside your tank. Over time, this sediment causes popping or banging noises and significantly reduces heating efficiency. We recommend an annual professional flush to extend the life of your unit and lower energy costs.

How do you deodorize a home after a Maryland storm flood?

Rainwater runoff often carries organic matter, which can leave a "musty" smell. We don't just mask the odor; we use industrial air scrubbers and professional-grade antimicrobial treatments that kill the bacteria causing the smell at the source.

Can a sump pump failure cause a total basement loss?

In many Baltimore neighborhoods, a sump pump is the only thing keeping the high water table at bay. If your pump fails during a thunderstorm, your basement can flood in minutes. We provide rapid water extraction and can install battery backup systems to prevent a repeat disaster.

What should I do if I hear water running but everything is turned off?

This is a classic sign of a hidden leak. Immediately check your water meter; if the indicator is moving, you have an active leak. Turn off your main water shut-off valve—usually located in the basement or near the street—and call Roto-Rooter for an emergency diagnostic visit.

What is hydro-jetting, and when is it better than a standard drain snake?

While a drain snake is great for clearing a simple clog, hydro-jetting uses high-pressure water to actually "scour" the inside of the pipe. In Baltimore, we often recommend this for commercial kitchens or older residential sewer lines that have been severely narrowed by years of grease, mineral scale, and sludge buildup.

Can Roto-Rooter handle commercial water damage restoration in Baltimore?

Yes. From Inner Harbor restaurants to large warehouses in Glen Burnie, we have the industrial-scale equipment to manage large-loss water events 24/7. We work quickly to minimize your business’s downtime and revenue loss.

What is the most common cause of sewer backups in older Baltimore neighborhoods?

Tree root intrusion is the primary culprit. Roots from mature city trees seek out the moisture in older clay or cast-iron sewer pipes, entering through small cracks or loose joints. Once inside, they create a "web" that catches debris. Roto-Rooter uses mechanical rooters and hydro-jetting to clear these obstructions and restore full flow to your main line.

Can I book an appointment with Roto-Rooter online?

Yes! You can easily schedule an appointment online—whether you need emergency service or want to choose a time that works best for your schedule. Once your appointment is booked, you’ll receive a confirmation email, and a Roto-Rooter representative will give you a call about 30 minutes before your technician arrives so you know exactly when to expect them.

Why does my Baltimore City water bill keep increasing despite no change in usage?

A sudden spike in your bill is the primary indicator of a "silent" leak. In many Baltimore neighborhoods, aging pipes develop pinhole leaks or underground cracks that aren't visible on the surface. We provide professional meter testing to confirm whether water loss is occurring on your property, and then use acoustic sensors to pinpoint the exact location.

Does Roto-Rooter provide water leak detection for Baltimore businesses?

Yes. We service commercial properties ranging from Inner Harbor restaurants to Fells Point retail shops. We understand that a leak can force a business to close, so we offer rapid, discreet detection to get your operations back to normal with minimal downtime.

Can heavy rain in Baltimore cause my drains to back up?

Yes. Baltimore has some areas with "combined" sewer systems. During intense Maryland rainstorms, the city's main lines can become overwhelmed, pushing water back into residential basements. We can install backwater valves to prevent this.

Does Roto-Rooter provide trenchless "no-dig" sewer repair in Baltimore?

Yes. To protect Baltimore’s historic sidewalks and landscaping, we offer trenchless pipe restoration. Instead of digging a massive trench across your yard or driveway, we use a specialized lining process to create a new "pipe within a pipe." This is a durable, permanent solution that minimizes disruption to your property.

Why is my Baltimore basement flooding after heavy rainfall?

Baltimore's proximity to the coast and high water table make basement moisture a persistent issue. During heavy Maryland storms, the ground becomes saturated, and aging storm drains can back up into your home. We specialize in sump pump repairs and professional-grade water extraction to keep your lower levels dry.

How accurate is acoustic water leak detection in Baltimore?

Our acoustic microphones are incredibly precise. By filtering out background city noise, our technicians can hear the specific sound of water escaping under pressure, often pinpointing the leak to within a few inches, even through thick concrete or earth.

Why do Baltimore homes experience more frequent drain clogs in the winter?

During Maryland’s colder months, fats, oils, and grease (FOG) that are poured down drains solidify much faster inside pipes. Additionally, older exterior pipes can shift during the freeze-thaw cycle, creating "bellies" or offsets where debris easily gets trapped. Professional drain cleaning in Baltimore, MD, can help tackle any drain clog during the winter months.

Can I clean my drains myself, or should I hire a professional?

Homeowners can often clear simple clogs. However, hiring a professional for drain cleaning in Baltimore for stubborn clogs in branch drain lines or main sewers is best to ensure thorough, safe cleaning. Professional-grade sewer cleaning machines can be dangerous in the hands of inexperienced operators.

Can Roto-Rooter handle the unique plumbing in historic Baltimore row houses?

Absolutely. Our Baltimore technicians are experts in the city’s historic architecture. A Roto-Rooter plumber in Baltimore knows how to navigate the narrow, shared plumbing lines and lath-and-plaster walls common in neighborhoods like Fells Point and Federal Hill without causing unnecessary structural damage.

Are frozen pipes a common issue in Baltimore during winter?

Yes. Baltimore’s deep-freeze cycles often cause water to expand inside uninsulated pipes, leading to high-pressure bursts. This is especially common in older homes with pipes in crawl spaces or exterior walls. Our technicians provide 24/7 emergency repair and can help you winterize your system to prevent future damage.

How often should drains be cleaned?

Depends on usage and what goes down the drain. Hair and grease, for instance, can cause serious clogs. Typically, older residential drains should be cleaned annually, while high-usage drains, such as those found in restaurants or institutional kitchens, may benefit from cleaning every three months. Commercial drains require more frequent cleaning, sometimes as often as every month. Roto-Rooter offers scheduled drain maintenance programs that significantly reduce the likelihood of a commercial clog that could impact your business.

Does Roto-Rooter charge extra for plumbing emergencies on weekends?

No. We do not charge additional fees for plumbing or drain services on nights, weekends, or holidays. We understand that emergencies in Baltimore happen at the most inconvenient times, so we offer the same fair, upfront pricing 24/7, 365 days a year.

Does my Baltimore homeowners' insurance cover drain cleaning?

Typically, basic policies do not cover the maintenance cost of cleaning a drain. However, if a backup causes water damage, your policy may cover the restoration. We provide the professional documentation you need for any insurance claims.

What is the difference between a secondary drain and a main sewer line?

A secondary line serves a single fixture, such as your kitchen sink or bathtub. The main sewer line carries all wastewater from your home to the Baltimore City municipal system. If every drain in your house is slow, the issue is likely in the main line.

Are Roto-Rooter's services safe for my Baltimore property's pipes?

Of course! Roto-Rooter is a trusted plumbing company, and we’ve been around since 1935. So, you can trust that we’ll use the right equipment and pressures for each pipe type. Plus, our plumbing techs are familiar with all local codes to ensure your plumbing is protected safely.

How do I know if I need drain cleaning in Baltimore?

A slow drain needs cleaning to restore proper flow. If multiple drains in your home or business drain slowly, the problem may lie in your main sewer line. Roto-Rooter has the tools to clean and unclog residential and commercial drains thoroughly. We use the best drain cleaning equipment in the industry, manufactured and assembled in our own factory.

Are leaks more common in older Baltimore neighborhoods?

They can be. Older homes may have outdated plumbing materials that are more susceptible to corrosion, joint failures, and leaks.
