Tips for Conserving Water in Your Laundry Room
Washing machines suck up quite a lot of water. In fact, 15 and 40 percent of a four-person home's water usage can be attributed to the washer. So, what can you do to cut down your water consumption?
Consolidate loads
One of the biggest drains on household water conservation is multiple people running small loads of their own clothes. Due to the fact that each person most likely won't be completely filling the washing machine, extra water that could have been used to clean more garments is simply wasted.
So, the easy solution here is to simply gather together everyone's clothes in one large load and pick through them later to separate. It may take you a little extra time, but it'll all be worth it when you get your water bill.
Change your clothes less
Another problem a lot of people run into is a mountain of "dirty" laundry as a result of constantly changing clothes throughout the day. This becomes especially relevant when temperatures skyrocket as a result of a heat wave. People wake up, put on a shirt, sweat through it and then have to change.
While it's hard to fight against incredible heat, one way to combat this is to have a designated dirty shirt. If you're working out or doing something that's going to make you sweat, just take off your current clean clothes and change into the dirty one. After a week or so, simply toss your designated dirty clothes in the laundry and pick another set for the next week.
Skip that extra rinse
Many washing machines have an extra rinse option that can be applied at the end of the regular cycle. This is there so that extremely dirty loads can be run through again, and yet many people simply leave this on for all of their laundry. Turning this option off can save a lot of water.
