If you are experiencing a major leak/water issue the plumbers of Roto-Rooter recommend that you shut off the main valve.  The water shut off valve is typically located where the main supply pipe enters your home, usually coming up through the basement floor near the water meter.

The main shut off will either be one or two valves near the main water supply pipe, which can be turned on and off by hand. There may also be an alternative shut off outside of your home, which can be referred to as a “buffalo box.” If you have a buffalo box, it generally is found in the ground near the edge of your property or street. Once you locate the box, you will most likely have to pry open its round metal cover and you can turn the valve by hand or a long handled key.
